![]() In 1909, while at work on Howards End, Forster published a short story, ‘The Machine Stops’, which offers an even bleaker vision of the influence machines would come to have over humanity in Forster’s view: by setting his story in the future, he can project a nightmare dystopian vision of a world in which humans worship ‘the Machine’ as a godlike entity, and live their lives entirely through technology (among other things, the story predicts Skype, instant messaging, and the internet more widely). Science, instead of freeing man … is enslaving him to machines … God what a prospect!’ Tellingly, he describes the motorcar as ‘the throbbing, stinking car’ in the novel itself. Forster’s book Howards End is a symbolic exploration of the philosophical, social and economic forces that existed in England during the early twentieth Century. He wrote in his diary on 27 January 1908, shortly before beginning the novel, that ‘I have been born at the end of the age of peace and can’t expect to feel anything but despair. Forster was deeply sceptical about modern life in many respects. ![]() ![]() Any analysis of Forster’s novel must contend with Forster’s deeply contradictory stance on this question. ![]()

To understand where we’re headed, we must first understand how we became the most dominant species on the planet. Finally, we’ll look at the future of humanity and the systems that may develop within the next century. From there, we’ll look at technology and how it has already impacted modern systems of religion, economics, and politics. To understand this perspective, we must first look to human history to see how modern society has developed. This book explores the way that technological advancement may lead to the decline of modern political, social, and economic systems, with advanced algorithms, “superhumans,” and data surveillance becoming the new normal. These will guide us to the next phase of our evolution, from Homo sapiens to Homo deus, or god-like beings. Consequently, we now look toward new goals: immortality, happiness, and divinity. However, in the modern era, we’ve mostly overcome these three problems through the development of technology and medical knowledge. These issues contributed to the deaths of millions of people and resulted in the rise and fall of global empires. 1-Page Summary 1-Page Book Summary of Homo Deusįor millennia, humans struggled with three serious problems: famine, plagues, and war. ![]() ![]() ![]() Race against Love, Mills and Boon (London, England), 1980, Silhouette (New York, NY), 1981. ![]() Set the Stars on Fire, Silhouette (New York, NY), 1980.īetrayal in Bali, Silhouette (New York, NY), 1980. I do like how the author replaced the role of villain Marek with an on the loose Ancient (alien who crash landed on earth or original vampire), keeps the story fresh and keeps the series going. Wished Marek (the villain) would have had more of fighting end or standoff, he was built up to be a mad ass mofo then just kind of whiffed at the end. The author is really good at setting the scene but seems to lack skill when it comes to the characters. Added more tension between Elise and Tegan but there could have been more in my opinion. I like how the booty scene came in the last half of the book. Elise uses Tegan first with drinking his blood to become strong again which in their society is a disrespectful move, breedmates are only suppose to drink blood from their bonded mates. They have such a strong chemistry together. ![]() ![]() Ooh I like the animosity between Elise and Tegan. Looks like the author is going to have to find a new source of conflict for Elise and Tegan. Elise already knows about the Breed and has in fact be living in one of the Darkhavens (little communities for vampires and breedmates). I like how the author is shaking things up a bit with this book. ![]() ![]() ![]() 5 But thus you shall deal with them: you shall ( I)destroy their altars, and break down their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images, and burn their carved images with fire.Ħ “For you are a holy people to the Lord your God ( J)the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth. 4 For they will turn your sons away from following Me, to serve other gods ( H)so the anger of the Lord will be aroused against you and destroy you suddenly.
